A new musical based on the life of influential Beatle John Lennon, entitled Lennon, is currently in rehearsals for a tryout tour that will take the piece to San Francisco and Boston before landing at Broadway's Broadhurst Theatre.

The musical is written and directed by Don Scardino, with the blessing of Lennon's widow Yoko Ono.

Below, cast members Will Chase, Julia Murney, Chuck Cooper, Mandy Gonzalez, Yoko Ono, Marcy Harriell, Chad Kimball, Julie Danao, Terrence Mann, Scardino and Michael Potts are seen in a just released publicity shot for the show.

Lennon begins previews at the Broadhurst on July 7, with an opening night scheduled for July 21.

Das könnte interessant werden...Hoffentlich gibt sich Don Scardino etwas mehr Mühe als die Leute, die für den derzeitigen Beach Boys Musical-Flop verantwortlich sind....

In den 80ern gab es in London und Liverpool schonmal ein Lennon Musical, das auch eigentlich sehr gut war. (Immerhin im Londoner West End mal Musical of the Year!)

Aber das Neue würde ich auch gerne sehen.

Knapp 25 Jahre nach dem gewaltsamen Tod von von John Lennon wird das Leben und Wirken des Ex-Beatle jetzt in einem Musical gewürdigt. Am Dienstagabend steht in San Francisco (Kalifornien) der Beginn der Voraufführungen des Musicals «Lennon» auf dem Programm.
Nach der offiziellen Premiere am 19. April und einer Zwischenstation in Boston soll die Show am 7. Juli an den New Yorker Broadway gehen. Das Musical unter der Regie von Don Scardino enthält bekannte Lennon-Songs wie «Imagine» und «Give Peace a Chance», aber auch die beiden bisher unveröffentlichten Lieder «India, India» und «I don't Want to Lose You».

Nach Scardinos Beschreibung wird «die Geschichte von Lennons Leben durch seine eigenen Worte und 27 seiner Lieder erzählt». Eine Truppe von neun Schauspielern - Frauen und Männer - stellt die Geschichte auf der Bühne dar. Dia- und Filmprojektionen ergänzen das musikalische Geschehen. 90 Prozent des Dialogs wurden wortgetreu aus früheren Lennon-Interviews übernommen.

Yoko Ono, die Witwe des 1980 erschossenen Musikers, hat dem Projekt ihren Segen gegeben. John würde das «sehr experimentelle» Stück sicher gut gefallen, mutmaßte Ono im «San Francisco Chronicle. Die Zuschauer würden über Lennon erfahren, dass er ein «sehr komplizierter Mann» war, meinte die Künstlerin. «Er war aber auch sehr ehrlich, eine Eigenschaft, die in der heutigen Welt fehlt. Es ist gut, daran zu erinnern.»

Jedenfalls hört sich das alles sehr gut an - wenn es denn hoffentlich auch sehr gut gemacht wird!

India ist ein so schöner Song. Ich frage mich, warum er nicht schon auf der Lennon Anthology erschienen ist? Eines seiner stärksten Lieder!

Und auf "I don't want to lose you" bin ich schon gespannt wie ein Flitzebogen, wurde ja auch schon von den Threetles unter dem Titel "Now and then" versucht, aber nie zuende geführt. Ich kenne dieses Lied überhaupt nicht.

Oh, recht schönen Dank!

Ja, wo gibt es denn sowas?

Bin übrigens beim Anhören zu dem Schluß gekommen, daß die Threetles diesen Song nicht weiterverarbeitet haben, weil er (noch) keinen roten Faden hat. Gerüchteweise sollen sie sich um diesen Song wieder einmal in die Wolle gekriegt haben - von wegen technische Schwierigkeiten.

Review: New musical should be called All About Yoko

If you are a fan of Yoko Ono, then you'll love "Lennon the Musical".

"Lennon the Musical", which had its world premiere in San Franciso on Tuesday, is all about John and Yoko's fabulous life together, their incredible love story and amazing love for each other. John's Beatles past is dismissed, because in the musical John is portrayed as needing to move on from the Beatles, was tired of the Beatles and found true love with Yoko.

The musical focuses on John and Yoko "starting over" post Beatles and is a tribute to their life together. No music from the Lennon-McCartney catalogue is included in the show, just John Lennon's solo work in the seventies. However, one highlight of this musical is hearing two previously unreleased John Lennon songs, "I Don’t Want to Lose You" and "India".

While John Lennon certainly was no saint, the musical portrays John right from the start in a poor light as a philanderer, by showing a scene from a party in the early seventies in which it is implied John has a tryst with a woman in another room. As a result, Yoko decides to split with John, which results in John's "lost weekend" in Los Angeles. During this "lost weekend", John is portrayed as lost and amounting to nothing without Yoko, showing him engaging in excessive partying and drinking.

In a scene which takes place in a Los Angeles nightclub, in which a drunken John yells "Dickie you're an a**hole" at the top of his lungs to Dickie Smothers, who is onstage performing as part of the Smothers Brothers duo, the use of profanity is completely uncalled for and does disrespect to the memory of John. At this point, John is described as having been apart from Yoko for just one year (he actually lived in Los Angeles with May Pang for 18 months) and makes no mention of his lover May that Yoko appointed to be John's mistress during their time apart.

A turning point in the musical is when John and Yoko reunite and reconnect at the famous New York City concert in which John is performing on stage and their eyes suddenly meet. Finally Yoko has permitted John to finally come back home after he realized he was "lost" and nothing without her.

The audience is treated to their "true love" when John and Yoko are sitting together at a piano and John sings a love song ("Love" from the John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album) to Yoko, slowly kissing her against a romantic backdrop of projected large intricate falling snow flakes.

Sean Lennon is featured prominently during the "Beautiful Boy" song but in contrast, Julian Lennon gets only a brief mention as John's son from a previous failed marriage to his first wife Cynthia.

So if you love Yoko and John's solo works, this is a musical to go see. But please, Beatles fans, no giggling allowed!
