Ex-RTE presenter nets €500,000 for Lennon film

A FORMER RTE presenter is set to earn €500,000 from a television documentary on the assassination of John Lennon, after buying the rights to audio interviews with his killer.

David Harvey, the former presenter of Crimeline, has sold the documentary on Mark Chapman to NBC in America and Channel 4 in Britain. It will be broadcast on December 8, the 25th anniversary of Lennon’s death in New York.

Prime Productions, Harvey’s company, last year bought the rights to interviews conducted with Chapman in his prison cell by Jack Jones, an American journalist. The 40 hours of tapes were recorded in 1981, 1991 and 1992, and while excerpts have been aired in other programmes, more extensive clips will form a central part of Harvey’s documentary, entitled I Killed John Lennon.

Channel 4 will broadcast the 60-minute programme at 10pm on December 8, while NBC will air it coast-to-coast in America on the same day.

Earlier this year Yoko Ono, Lennon’s widow, criticised plans to air the interviews. “Myself, John’s family and so many fans will be hurt by showing such a programme,” she said.

Chapman once said he shot the former Beatle in order to “steal his fame” and Lennon’s widow fears that publicity from the show will give the killer what he wants. “I think it’s horrible to do this,” she said.

“It shows a lack of understanding of the painful memories of what happened to John’s beautiful life.”

The programme-makers have insisted the issue will be handled sensitively. A Channel 4 spokesman has said: “It’s very much a serious documentary. Neither Chapman nor his family have received payment.”

The station also denied that the documentary would fulfil Chapman’s warped ambitions. “The programme looks into his psychology. It is about the mind of a murderer rather than about John Lennon. It will give viewers an insight into what was going on in his mind and what his motivation was.”

The documentary reconstructs events on the day of the killing from Chapman’s perspective, using other witnesses.

Commenting on the deal, Harvey said: “It’s a toe in the international water for us. This is a very difficult market to break into and is a real break for us.”

Harvey said the contract is worth more than €500,000 to the company. Additional revenue could also accrue because Channel 4 International will market the documentary to Japan, Europe and Australia.

The former RTE presenter would not say how much he paid for the rights for the Chapman interview. Jones, who acts as a mediator for Chapman with the outside world, has collaborated on the show with the Irish company.

The American reporter met Chapman through a prison volunteer service group. He wrote a book in 1992, entitled Let Me Take You Down: Inside the Mind of Mark David Chapman, the Man Who Killed John Lennon. It included long passages in Chapman’s own words.

Lennon was murdered by Chapman on the night of December 8 outside his apartment. Earlier that day Chapman had secured Lennon’s autograph. As the singer walked past him, he called out: “Mr Lennon.” When he turned, Chapman fired five bullets at the former Beatle, who had just stepped out of a limosine with Ono. Chapman then dropped his revolver and said: “I just shot John Lennon.”

The police arrived within minutes of the shooting to find Chapman waiting outside reading a copy of JD Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye. Lennon, 40, died a short time later in hospital, after doctors failed to resuscitate him. Chapman, now 50, is serving life in Attica prison and has been denied parole twice in the past five years.

Lennon’s murderer reportedly told a parole board hearing that he had a back-up hit list in case he was unable to get to the former Beatle. He told the panel that within a month of deciding to kill Lennon he thought up “a substitute list” consisting of several names. “Probably, I thought he wouldn’t be an attainable type of thing, and I did think of harming some people,” Chapman reportedly told the board.

He listed three names, which have not been released. Jones has said Jackie Onassis and Johnny Carson were among those who Chapman considered killing.

ich versuche mir oft vorzustellen, wie sich Chapman fühlen muss.Klar ist, dass er seine Tat bitter bereut hat.Er sitzt seit einem Vierteljahrhundert im Gefängnis und ist jetzt sicher ein ganz anderer , (alter) Mann.
Doch als er jung war und den berühmten Musiker auf der Strasse sah, da kann ich mir sehr gut vorstellen, wie er sich da gefühlt haben muss.Ihm muss es gekribbelt haben.Wenn er von seinem Mordplan abgewichen wäre, hätte er eine Zeitlang keine Arbeit gehabt und wäre ziellos gewandert.Aber durch die Tat hat er das erreicht, was er wollte : unsterblichen, aber negativen Ruhm.

Chapman war - und ist es wohl noch - ein psychisch kranker Mann. So vor zwei oder drei Jahren bot er Yoko einen Treff an. Sie lehnte natürlich ab. Chapman rechnet also immer noch damit, Schlagzeilen zu machen. Er spielt berechnend mit einem "Berühmten"-Status, den er sich selber geschaffen hat und den ihn keiner mehr nehmen kann.
Was täte ein Mann in seiner Situation, wenn er wirklich bereuen würde? Dutschkes Attentäter Josef Bachmann hatte sich vor Scham selbst umgebracht.
