Killer reveals thinking behind Lennon's murder

The man who killed Ex-Beatle John Lennon almost 25 years ago considered himself a “white knight” on an unstoppable crusade, it emerged today.

Mark Chapman hoped that murdering the music legend in a hail of bullets would cement his identity in the eyes of the world.

“It was like a train, a runaway train, there was no stopping it,” he said on tapes to be aired on US television this week.

“Nothing could have stopped me. This was a white knight kind of a thing, a crusade.”

Chapman, 50, was in his New York apartment thinking about The Beatles when he came up with the plan.

“I was sitting cross-legged on the carpet… and I remember opening up the Sergeant Pepper album,” he said.

“The Catcher in the Rye was very prominent …,” he said, referring to the novel by JD Salinger, “… and I remember saying in my mind, ‘What if I killed him ?’.

“I remember thinking perhaps my identity would be found in the killing of John Lennon.”

Chapman, who is serving a life sentence in New York’s Attica state prison, said something in him “just broke”.

Lennon died on December 8, 1980 when Chapman fired five bullets into the back of his head outside his Manhattan home.

John Lennon's killer: Nothing could have stopped me

The man who murdered John Lennon 25 years ago says "nothing could have stopped" his twisted quest to track down and assassinate the ex-Beatle.
"I was under total compulsion," killer Mark David Chapman says in a segment to be aired Friday on "Dateline NBC."

"It was like a train, a runaway train, there was no stopping it."

Chapman fatally shot Lennon on Dec. 8, 1980, as the musician and his wife, Yoko Ono, returned home from a night in a Manhattan recording studio. Chapman's comments came from audiotapes made in 1991-92 and first used as part of a British documentary.

Chapman recalled waiting for Lennon that night, then reacting as he saw a limousine pull up outside the ex-Beatle's home.

"I heard a voice in my head saying, `Do it, do it,'" Chapman recounted. "And as he passed me I pulled out the gun, aimed at his back and pulled the trigger five times in succession."

Chapman recalled that his desire to kill Lennon began one day in his apartment in Hawaii, where he was sitting on the floor and looking at the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. His animosity soon began to consume Chapman.

"There was a successful man who kind of had the world on a chain, so to speak, and there I was, not even a link of that chain, just a person who had no personality," Chapman said. "And something in me just broke."

Mark Chapman describes himself as a man on a 'mission' Chapman Was On 'Crusade'

The man who killed Ex-Beatle John Lennon said he was on a "crusade" when he pulled the trigger.

Mark Chapman described himself as a "white knight" who hoped to define himself by killing the pop legend.

Lennon was killed 25 years ago as he entered his apartment next to Central Park in New York.

Chapman was jailed for life for pumping five bullets into his hero's back.

"It was like a train, a runaway train, there was no stopping it," Chapman says on tapes to be aired on US television this week.

"Nothing could have stopped me. This was a white knight kind of a thing, a crusade."

Chapman, 50, was in his New York apartment thinking about The Beatles when he came up with the plan.

"The Catcher in the Rye was very prominent ...," he said, referring to the novel by JD Salinger, "... and I remember saying in my mind, `What if I killed him ?'.

Lennon was killed by five shots to his back "I remember thinking perhaps my identity would be found in the killing of John Lennon."

Chapman said something in him "just broke".

"It's a little bit cold and there's a little wind, and somehow I knew that this was it, that this was the day.

"And all of a sudden from way across Central Park West I see the limo. And I know that, that it's him.

"I have this incredible feeling. And John Lennon's car pulled up. I heard a voice in my head saying, `Do it ! Do it ! Do it !'.

"And as he passed me, I pulled out the gun, aimed at his back and pulled the trigger five times in succession."

Chapman said he was "under total compulsion" and remained thoroughly convinced there was nothing he could do to help himself.

"You have to understand, I don't think I truly thought I was doing anything evil. I thought I was good."

The tapes, recorded in 1991 and 1992, form part of a Channel 4 documentary, I Killed John Lennon, to be broadcast in the UK on the anniversary of his death.

They will be aired for the first time on NBC's Dateline this Friday.

Ja das hab ich auch irgendwo gelesen. Er ist ein ARschloch, ein Wahnsinniger. Bekloppt. Auch dass er die SChuld dem Buch der Fänger Im Roggen gibt is bescheuert. Das Buch hatte nichts und nichts mit einem Mord an friedensbewegten Rockstars zu tun.
